As we age, skin loses its elasticity, and dynamic wrinkles begin to form. Hyperactivity of the facial expression muscles often results in the development of deep frown lines, forehead lines and Crow’s feet. What causes wrinkles?
As we age, the imperfections show on our face. Facial lines, wrinkles and folds are a normal part of the ageing process. The skin structure changes over time and the destruction of tissue cells becomes greater than the production. Our skin becomes more fragile, less elastic and less flexible. The hyaluronic acid (HA) content of our skin, which is important for water retention, decreases and the oil-producing (sebaceous) glands and sweat glands become less active making our skin drier and less supple. This results in the skin looking less plump and less smoother. As a result, the skin becomes more transparent and loses its youthful colour, glow and appearance. While all these changes are taking place, gravity is also at work, pulling at the skin and facial muscles causing them to sag. Hormones, sun exposure and smoking also affect how the skin the looks. The end result is that the skin looks creased and folded.
Dynamic and Static Lines
Ageing is accompanied by the appearance of 2 types of wrinkles:
- Dynamic lines caused by muscle over-activity. This can be treated with anti wrinkle injections.
- Static lines caused by volume loss. This can be treated with Dermal Fillers.
